Village Festivities
In Bulgarian culture there is a tradition preserved through the centuries – every town or village celebrates the day of its patron saint (usually that was the patron of the village church). On the day of the fair, apart from the festal sermon in the church, a special celebration takes place at the village centre. In addition, the tables in all the houses are piled with various plentiful dishes and delicacies for guests and hosts. In the villages in the Kazanlak region, it is a tradition to prepare a special dish called “kurban”, i.e. boiled lamb, as a votive offering. It is consecrated by the priest, and everybody on the feast takes a piece, to the health and rich harvest of the whole village.
